Golden, crispy Greek honey donuts—also known as loukoumades—are bite-sized puffs of fried dough soaked in honey syrup, topped with cinnamon and nuts. A beloved dessert passed down through generations, perfect for gatherings or cozy nights in.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Yield: 30 small donuts

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2¼ tsp) instant yeast

1¼ cups warm water

1 tbsp sugar

½ tsp salt

1 tbsp olive oil (optional)

Neutral oil for frying

½ cup honey

¼ cup water

Ground cinnamon

Crushed walnuts or sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Stir in flour and salt to form a sticky batter. Add olive oil if desired.

3. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled.

4. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pot.

5. Using a wet spoon or hand, drop small scoops of dough into hot oil. Fry 2–3 minutes until golden.

6. Warm honey and ¼ cup water in a saucepan.

7. Drain loukoumades on paper towels. Drizzle with honey syrup while still hot.

8. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nuts. Serve immediately.

Notes

You can make the batter ahead and refrigerate for up to 8 hours.

Air fryer version: Bake at 375°F for 6–8 mins, brush with syrup after cooking.

Loukoumades are best enjoyed fresh and warm.
